The Cleveland State University Office of Research, in conjunction with the IoT Collaborative (IOTC), is seeking proposals for the development of innovative courses focused on the Internet of Things and the application of connected devices, including emerging and adjacent technologies. Multi-disciplinary courses that leverage the complementary teaching and learning strengths of CSU’s colleges and foster collaborations among faculty across campus are strongly encouraged. Proposed courses should be appropriately aligned with CSU curricula (including prerequisite courses, applicability to existing or new majors/minors/concentrations, potential applicability for continuing education, etc.).
The intention is to offer the new courses the 2019-2020 academic year. Proposals should include a general timeline to meet this condition.
Eligibility
Full-time faculty (tenured, tenure-track, non-tenure-track, research) or faculty teams (max 3). If more than one, then the proposal should demonstrate that faculty offer complementary areas of expertise to the proposed course.
Areas of Interest
Faculty are encouraged to consider the broad scope and range of applications of the Internet of Things, and the use of those technologies to create meaningful connections. General areas of interest include, but are not limited to, 1) community engagement, 2) privacy and security, 3) health applications and ethics, and 4) sensors and data analytics. Courses might cover such topics as: user interface (UI) design, open data, product design, medical applications, public health, systems engineering, smart governance, software engineering, and cybersecurity, among many others.
Critical Dates
- September 15, 2018 - RFP released
- October 15, 2018 - Proposal Submission Deadline, 5:00 PM
- November 1, 2018 - Funding awarded/project start
- April 1, 2019 - Project end/all project deliverables submitted
Submission Guidelines
Proposals should be no more than three pages in length, consisting of a cover page and a two-page project description.
The project description must include the following:
- Team member names, with a single point of contact (responsible party) identified
- Title of course for which the funding is sought
- Course justification and description of course goals and development activities
- Course implementation timeline
- Planned split of funding if project includes more than one faculty member (see budget guidelines below)
The cover page template is available?here. The “Project Type” checkbox can be left blank. Endorsement by the department chair and college dean of the contact faculty member is required, and indicates support for the proposed course at the department and college level.
Budget Guidelines
The Office of Research will provide reimbursement for academic time of the awarded faculty (maximum 3 persons) in the amount of $2,000 per course credit hour, with a maximum award of $6,000 for a 3 credit hour course. The requested funding split among the team members should be indicated. Note that this funding is not a course buyout. Funds will be placed in the faculty members’ P.I. accounts upon submission of the course development materials for curriculum approval and approval by the Office of Research. Spending from a P.I. account must comply with University spending policies.
Deliverables
The awardee is expected to deliver a course syllabus, course description, tentative list of course materials, and offering date no later than April 1, 2019. The award winner may be asked to provide a verbal summary of the project outcomes and next steps.
