General Education Requirement: Introduction to University Life?2021-2022

The First Year Experience seminar: Introduction to University Life (ASC 101) is a one-credit general education course that should be completed in the student’s first semester at Cleveland State University. This course assists new students in making a successful transition to Cleveland State University both academically and personally through engaged learning experiences. This course is designed to help new students build relationships, promote engagement in the curricular and co-curricular experience, encourage civility, connect to various resources of the University, and emphasize the expectations of Cleveland State University. It also aims to help students develop and practice skills in the areas of critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and others that can contribute to success in college and beyond.

All incoming first-year undergraduate degree-seeking students must enroll in and pass a first year experience (FYE) course within their first 30 credit hours at CSU.

Exemption Policy?
Students may request an exemption from Introduction to University Life if they meet one of the following requirements:
  • Student has completed a credit-bearing associate degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • Student has completed a minimum of 24 College Credit Plus (CCP) credits with a minimum GPA of 2.5 (on a 4-point scale) at Cleveland State University.
  • Student is 25 years of age or older at the time of enrollment.
  • Student has transferred a minimum of 15 military credits.

If one of the aforementioned criteria is met with supporting documentation if your transcript(s) is/are not already on file with Cleveland State University, and the student successfully completes CLEState Compass, the Manager of First Year Experience will grant an exemption. Formal decisions will be communicated via email. Please note this exemption is not applicable to any of the following FYE courses: ASC 101S, HON 101, and NUR 101.

Dual Enrollment and Test Credits

New Freshman students coming straight from high school cannot qualify for this exemption on the basis of earned dual enrollment or test credit. Any college credits earned through Advanced Placement (AP), other placement tests, or College Credit Plus (CCP) credits earned in high school do not count towards the 24 semester credits required for exemption. However, if the student enters the University with a completed Associate degree or higher from an accredited institution earned while a CCP student, an exemption can be granted.

If you believe you meet the above criteria, you may request an exemption from Introduction to University Life. Please complete the?form and?submit?no later than 5:00pm on the first weekday class of the semester.
