Hiram Lopez Valdez, Ph.D. Acknowledged with 2023 Emerging Scholars Nod

Congratulations go out to Hiram López Valdez, Ph.D., Cleveland State University Assistant Professor of Mathematics, for being featured in the just-released Emerging Scholars 2023 edition of "Diverse: Issues in Higher Education."?Dr. López Valdez was one of 15 nationally-selected professors for the honor.

He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from CINVESTAV-IPN, Mexico, in 2016, under supervision of Prof. Rafael H. Villarreal. Thanks to a Swiss Excellence Scholarship Award, part of his Ph.D. studies (2014-2015) were made in University of Neuchatel, Switzerland, under supervision of Prof. Elisa Gorla. Dr. López Valdez's Ph.D. thesis focused on coding theory from an algebraic point of view.

From 2016-2018, Dr. López?was a Postdoctoral Fellow under direction of Dr. Felice Manganiello in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Clemson University. In 2020, the website Lathisms 2020, which showcases contributions of Latinx and Hispanic mathematicians during Hispanic Heritage Month, featured the Assistant Professor as their "Mathematician of the Day" on September 17, 2020. When "Diverse: Issues in Higher Education" asked what part of his academic journey he is most proud, Dr. López Valdez had a surprising answer for them:?“The people I have met because of the research... I have been able to connect with many great people that I had no idea existed.” He also told them he's committed to creating a path for other mathematicians and helping them to connect to one another. That's inspired action, to be sure, and something Cleveland State University prides itself on every single day.
